Estes Express Lines, a top player in the logistics sector has significantly expanded its operational network by acquiring seven former Yellow Transportation terminals. This strategic move underscores Estes’ commitment to enhancing operational capacity and improving service for its customers.

2024 Expansion Overview

In 2024, Estes has achieved a major milestone by increasing its terminal capacity by 508 doors, marking a 4.5% growth from the previous year. The company’s total door count now stands at 11,832, with plans to add 940 more doors within the next nine months. This expansion includes the acquisition of 29 terminals and the assumption of 10 leases from Yellow Transportation. Key new locations include Charlotte, NC; Milwaukee, WI; Minneapolis, MN; Rockford, IL; South Bend, IN; and Eugene, OR.

“These acquisitions demonstrate our ongoing investment in resources to boost capacity and better serve our customers,” said Webb Estes, President and COO. He praised the team for the swift integration of these new assets, which include hundreds of shipping containers and trailers.

Growth of Network and Fleet

The recent acquisition has bolstered Estes’ coast-to-coast network with the addition of 290 new doors. The Charlotte terminal, now the largest in the network with 275 doors, highlights the scale of this expansion. Alongside increasing terminal capacity, Estes has also expanded its fleet, acquiring 6,800 additional trailers this year, bringing its total fleet to over 45,000.

This expansion reaffirms Estes’ commitment to scaling operations and enhancing service delivery, solidifying its position in the competitive logistics and transportation industry.

The company has already opened a 58-door terminal in Florence, South Carolina, and intends to open additional locations in Reno, Nevada (54 doors), and Cinnaminson, New Jersey (92 doors), all acquired from Yellow’s estate.

“These acquisitions represent the single biggest influx of terminals and equipment in Estes’ recent history,” said Webb Estes, the company’s president and chief operating officer.

Estes plans to launch a total of at least 20 terminals this year, with the first eight expected by June’s end. Additional openings are scheduled for Tacoma, Washington; San Fernando Valley, California; Detroit; and Austin, Texas, totaling 985 doors.

Estes has also bolstered its fleet with over 130 tractors, 6,000 trailers, and various equipment obtained from former Yellow locations.

“Acquiring these terminals was just step one — we’re now focused on putting them to work as quickly as possible to better serve our customers, which is exactly what we’re doing with these first ones,” said Carrie Johnstone, Estes’ vice president of customer experience and innovation.

In a video update to customers, Estes President and COO, Webb Estes, confirmed that the company has fully recovered from the cyberattack. Throughout the ordeal, the Richmond-based carrier worked tirelessly to ensure that freight continued to move for its customers, despite the systems, terminal phones, and company email accounts being compromised.

“We are incredibly appreciative of the hard work of our employees and the support of our customers, which allowed us to continue to keep America moving forward,” Webb Estes said in a recent statement. “Our systems are completely back online, and we are glad our focus is now solely on taking great care of our customers’ freight needs.”

Estes hired GuidePoint Security to safely restore its systems after a cyberattack. As a result, Estes’ website, “My Estes” program, and shipping applications are now back online. The company’s API connections have also been restored, allowing customers to integrate shipping functionality into their business applications and websites.

No specific details were provided about the size or duration of the freight diversions caused by the cyberattack.

Despite the cyberattack, ABF Freight, a carrier owned by ArcBest, experienced a 20% increase in shipments in Q3. This allowed them to haul lighter loads, with the weight per shipment decreasing by 6.4% compared to the previous year. Shipments per day also increased by 1.5% in Q3.

The disruption at Estes actually benefited XPO, another shipping company, as their shipment volumes in October exceeded seasonal expectations when compared to September. Shipments per day increased by 7.8% in Q3.

“If we tried to back out the benefit that we got from the cyberattack at another LTL carrier, October would have still been in line with seasonality for us, relative to September,” said Estes XPO Chief Strategy Officer, Ali Faghri.
