In an industry where reliability and safety are nonnegotiable, few names have been part of the journey as long as Grote Industries. The company is celebrating 125 years in business, a milestone that reflects its deep ties to trucking and its long-standing role in shaping the equipment that drivers and fleets depend on every day.

Headquartered in Madison, Indiana, Grote’s story tracks closely with the evolution of modern transportation, from early manufacturing roots to today’s advanced safety and trailer technologies.

From Early Manufacturing to Industry Standard

Grote Industries began in 1901, founded by William D. Grote as a chemical and industrial oxygen company. As trucking and commercial transportation expanded, the business adapted alongside it.

By the 1920s, Grote was already breaking new ground with plastic manufacturing, including the development of injection-molded products and automated molding technology. That early focus on innovation carried into 1929, when the company introduced the first retro-reflective vehicle reflector. That advancement helped establish the standard for the reflectors still used across highways today.

For drivers, that kind of equipment is not just another component. It is part of what keeps trucks visible and operations moving safely in all conditions.

Built Around Real-World Fleet Needs

Over the decades, Grote introduced products aimed at solving everyday challenges faced by drivers and maintenance teams.

Among those developments:

The first all non-metallic lamp, designed for durability in demanding conditions

The Turtle-Back Marker Lamp was introduced in 1965

A no-splice wiring system to simplify installation and reduce failure points

The Ultra-Blue-Seal modular trailer wiring system in 1983

The industry’s first LED marker light in 1989

Each step forward focused on reducing downtime, improving reliability, and making equipment easier to maintain in real-world fleet operations.

A Company Culture That Stayed Consistent

Even as technology evolved, the company remained family-owned, something leadership says has shaped its long-term approach.

Bill Grote, current Chairman of the Board, has pointed to the role family values played in building that foundation, emphasizing discipline, responsibility, and consistency over time. Those same principles continue to influence how the company operates today, from leadership decisions to product development.

Moving Into the Next Phase of Trailer Technology

Today, Grote is expanding beyond traditional lighting and wiring into more connected systems. Through its Networks division and 4SEE platform, the company is working in areas like programmable lighting, radar integration, and telematics.

These technologies are aimed at improving both safety and efficiency, giving fleets better visibility into their equipment and performance on the road.

“For 125 years, our success has come from standing shoulder-to-shoulder with our customers,” said Dominic Grote, CEO. “We listen first, innovate second, and measure every advancement by how well it addresses real challenges our customers face. That commitment – to partner deeply, respond quickly, and design with purpose – continues to guide every new product we create at Grote Industries.”

Long-Term Relationships Still Driving Growth

That focus on customer relationships has been a consistent theme throughout the company’s history.

“What I’ve always been proudest of is that Grote grew the right way – by doing things honestly, treating people fairly, and never being afraid to take a chance when the opportunity was right,” said Buzz Grote, past Chairman of the Board. “When we were first experimenting with LED lamps, we took the idea straight to one of our fleet customers, and their response was simple: ‘If you can build something like that, I’d buy it.’ That trust and confidence meant everything, and it’s that same partnership with customers that has driven Grote’s success ever since.”

For fleets and owner-operators alike, that kind of collaboration often translates into equipment that actually holds up under pressure.

Recognizing 125 Years Across a Global Workforce

To mark the anniversary, Grote plans to hold companywide celebrations throughout June, bringing together employees across its global operations.

The company now operates beyond Indiana, with locations in New York, Canada, Mexico, Germany, and China. More than 1,600 employees are involved in everything from engineering and manufacturing to testing and distribution.

Why This Milestone Matters for the Industry

For trucking professionals and industry stakeholders, milestones like this are more than a company anniversary. They highlight how equipment manufacturers have helped shape safety standards, reduce maintenance challenges, and support evolving fleet needs.

Grote’s continued focus on visibility systems, electrical components, and connected trailer technology reflects where the industry is heading next.

After 125 years, the company’s direction remains tied to the same core priorities that matter on the road every day: safety, reliability, and practical innovation that works where it counts.

Truck drivers consistently prioritize transparent pay, predictable schedules, modern equipment, and responsive issue resolution when choosing carriers. The American Transportation Research Institute’s 2025 Critical Issues report identifies economy, driver retention, truck parking shortages, and detention as top industry concerns that directly affect drivers’ daily lives and earnings. This guide breaks down these priorities with actionable steps to identify employers who deliver on their promises.

Transparent Pay Drivers Expect Upfront

Clear pay details build trust and reduce turnover. ATRI’s 2025 report highlights truck parking shortages and detention as major operational costs that cut into driver earnings. Carriers providing specific CPM rates, weekly minimums, and detention pay policies retain drivers longer.

Job postings listing “0.65 CPM plus $25/hour detention after two hours” outperform vague “top industry pay” ads. During recruiter calls, request a sample settlement for a typical 2,500-mile week to see real take-home pay.

Schedules You Can Actually Plan Around

Predictable home time ranks highest because schedule uncertainty causes burnout. ATRI lists truck parking and customer detention among the top five operational challenges. Regional and dedicated accounts with weekly hometime offer stability over OTR unpredictability.

Search carrier reviews on The Truckers Report for “consistent home time” mentions. Ask recruiters: “What percentage of drivers meet their guaranteed home days weekly, and how do you handle dispatch changes?”

Reliable Modern Equipment That Keeps You Moving

Breakdowns kill paychecks and patience. ATRI’s 2025 operational costs analysis shows average fleet age around 2.5 years industry-wide, but newer trucks with collision avoidance systems and APUs reduce downtime. Fleets investing in maintenance report higher driver satisfaction.

Request average fleet age and shop turnaround times during interviews. Top carriers share uptime stats like “98% on-road readiness” and welcome yard inspections of recent equipment.

Fast Fixes for Road Problems

Responsive support separates good carriers from great ones. Drivers prefer 24/7 dispatch access and mobile apps for real-time issue tracking. Slow resolutions amplify daily stress and fuel turnover.

Test recruiter response times during hiring; it’s your first clue. Ask: “Describe handling a recent breakdown or detention dispute, including resolution time.” Leaders use driver portals showing live ticket status.

Use This Table to Spot Winners vs Losers Instantly

When you see job ads, scan this table from top to bottom. The left column shows what drivers want most. The second column proves it’s a real industry problem. Red flag column = phrases that scream “RUN.” Green flag column = what winners actually say or show you.

What Drivers Want

Why It Matters (Real Data)

RED FLAG (Skip This Job)

GREEN FLAG (Chase This Carrier)

Transparent Pay

Detention/parking cut earnings

“Competitive rates” only

Sample paycheck provided

Predictable Schedules

Top ATRI operational issue

“As available” hometime

Guaranteed weekly resets

Modern Equipment

Industry avg fleet age ~2.5 years

Trucks over 4 years old

Under 2.5 years average

Fast Issue Resolution

24/7 apps improve retention

Voicemail-only support

Live tracking portal

Example: Ad says “competitive CPM, home hometime as loads allow” = both red flags = delete. Ad says “0.62 CPM + detention pay, home Thu-Sun guaranteed, Freightliners avg 18 months” = three green flags = apply now.

Frequently Asked Questions

What specific pay details should I request during interviews?
Demand base CPM or hourly rate, detention policy, accessorials, and a sample settlement showing deductions.

How do I verify equipment quality before applying?
Ask for average fleet age (target under 2.5 years) and recent maintenance records.

What questions reveal schedule reliability?
“How often do drivers miss guaranteed home time, and what’s your dispatch override policy?”

How can I test support responsiveness pre-hire?
Track recruiter reply speed now and request specific resolution examples.

Why prioritize newer equipment?
Collision mitigation systems and efficient transmissions cut fatigue and repair downtime.

Truck drivers who ask these targeted questions land with carriers that match their priorities, avoiding frustration and maximizing earnings. Use the table above to eliminate bad fits in seconds during your next job search.

Keeping trucks on the road depends just as much on the shop as it does on the driver’s seat. That reality was front and center as Peterbilt Technician Institute reached a major milestone with the graduation of its 150th class.

Based at its Irving, Texas campus, the program has steadily built a pipeline of trained technicians to support Peterbilt dealers and fleets across North America. The latest graduating class represents years of ongoing investment in technician education at a time when the industry continues to face a critical skills shortage.

“Reaching our 150th graduating class is more than a milestone; it highlights our steady support in preparing the next generation of qualified service technicians,” said Danny Landholm, Peterbilt director of dealer network development. “Our graduates are trained not only to service and maintain today’s most sophisticated trucks but also to adapt as technology evolves.”

Supporting the Trucks Drivers Rely On

For drivers and fleet operators, the quality of maintenance behind the scenes directly affects uptime, safety, and operating costs. PTI was created specifically to address the growing need for technicians who understand modern trucks and the technologies built into them.

Since its launch, the institute has focused on producing technicians who are ready to step into dealership service bays with hands-on experience rather than just textbook knowledge. The program has grown into one of the leading diesel technology training pathways tied directly to a major OEM dealer network.

The milestone reached in Texas reflects more than just the number of classes completed. It highlights Peterbilt’s long-term commitment to supporting its dealer network with technicians capable of working on increasingly complex vehicles.

Training Built for Today’s Equipment

PTI’s curriculum blends classroom instruction with real-world application. Students train on current Peterbilt equipment while earning factory-level certifications designed to match what they will see on the job.

According to PTI, instruction covers advanced systems that are becoming standard across fleets, including alternative fuel platforms, electric powertrain diagnostics, and telematics technology. This approach helps ensure graduates are prepared for both today’s trucks and the changes already coming to the industry.

“Upon completing the program, students earn factory-trained technician credentials that can help fast-track their careers at more than 430 Peterbilt dealerships across the United States and Canada,” PTI said.

A Direct Pipeline Into the Industry

For industry stakeholders, the value of programs like PTI extends beyond individual graduates. Each class helps stabilize dealership service operations and supports fleet reliability nationwide. For drivers, it means better-trained technicians maintaining the equipment they depend on every day.

As trucking technology continues to advance, the need for skilled technicians who can diagnose, repair, and adapt will only increase. The graduation of PTI’s 150th class signals both how far the program has come and how critical technician development remains to the future of trucking.

Those interested in learning more about the Peterbilt Technician Institute and its training opportunities can find additional details through PTI here.

Changes are coming to diesel engine oil, and the timeline is now clearer. The American Petroleum Institute has confirmed it is moving forward with the development of a new engine oil specification known as PC-12, setting the stage for oils designed to support the next generation of diesel engines beginning in 2027.

The decision follows months of technical review and signals that the industry is preparing for the tighter emissions requirements tied to EPA’s 2027 regulations.

How the PC-12 Category Is Taking Shape

API’s Lubricants Standards Group has approved several steps that lock in the direction of the new oil category.

First, the technical requirements for PC-12 have been accepted and aligned with ASTM D4485 standards, which govern diesel engine oil performance benchmarks. That approval establishes the baseline that oil manufacturers will now work from.

Second, two new oil designations have been finalized. These will appear as API CL-4 and API FB-4, replacing today’s focus on CK-4 and FA-4 as engines evolve.

Finally, API has set January 1, 2027, as the First License Date. That is the point when oils meeting the new standards can officially be sold with the API certification mark.

Why PC-12 Matters for Engines and Fleets

Current diesel oils were largely developed to support engines built around the 2017 emissions standards. PC-12 oils are being engineered for EPA’s 2027 requirements, which call for a 75 percent reduction in nitrogen oxides and a 50 percent reduction in particulate matter.

To support that shift, the two new oil categories serve different purposes.

API CL-4 is intended for broad use across mixed fleets. It is designed to be backward compatible with engines currently using CK-4, CJ-4, and earlier formulations, making it the more flexible option for fleets running a wide range of equipment.

API FB-4 is focused on fuel efficiency and emissions performance. Like today’s FA-4 oils, it will have limited backward compatibility and is expected to be used primarily in 2027 model year engines or those specifically approved by engine manufacturers. This category will introduce lower-viscosity grades such as SAE 0W-20 and 5W-20 to the heavy-duty market as manufacturers look to reduce internal engine friction and meet greenhouse gas targets.

Preparing the Supply Chain Ahead of 2027

API has also outlined steps to avoid supply disruptions once the new standards take effect. The organization plans to open its licensing portal several months before the January 2027 launch date. That will allow oil marketers to register CL-4 and FB-4 products early, so certified oils are available when fleets begin transitioning.

What Happens Next

The PC-12 development process is entering a 30-day electronic ballot period, during which industry stakeholders can provide final input. Once that phase is complete, the focus will shift from laboratory validation to commercial production and distribution.

With the timeline now established, fleets, engine manufacturers, and oil suppliers have a clearer view of what changes are coming and when they will arrive.

Success in trucking and service operations rarely comes down to luck. It is built through repetition, preparation, and the ability to execute under pressure. That was on full display this week in Nashville, where Dom McConnell, a technician at Rush Truck Centers – Orlando South, earned the all-around Grand Champion title at the 2025 Rush Enterprises Tech Skills Rodeo.

For McConnell, the win did not happen overnight. It came after years of learning the competition and refining his approach.

Learning the Rodeo One Year at a Time

McConnell first competed in the Rush Enterprises Tech Skills Rodeo in 2023. He did not place, but the experience left a strong impression. Rather than seeing the outcome as a setback, he focused on understanding how the event worked and what judges were looking for.

He returned in 2024, competing in San Antonio. Once again, he did not place, but the second appearance gave him a clearer view of the Rodeo’s structure and scoring. Beyond fixing the truck, success depended on following procedures precisely and communicating each step of the process to the judges.

That trip also marked a personal milestone. McConnell got engaged on the Riverwalk, adding even more motivation heading into his next attempt.

Everything Comes Together in Nashville

Coming into his third Rodeo appearance in Nashville, McConnell set a realistic goal. He wanted to make the finals. With his fiancé cheering him on and his wedding just weeks away, McConnell leaned on everything he had learned from previous competitions.

This time, it all clicked.

McConnell captured the Medium-Duty, Peterbilt, and Medium-Duty Grand Championship titles, then was named the all-around Grand Champion at the 20th anniversary Rush Enterprises Tech Skills Rodeo, held Tuesday at the Gaylord Opryland.

“It feels amazing. I never would have thought” it possible, McConnell said.

Training and Staying Current Made the Difference

McConnell credited his performance not only to prior Rodeo experience but also to the work he has put into staying current throughout his career. Keeping up with new systems, procedures, and manufacturer guidance played a major role in his success.

“This is why it’s so important to make sure that you’re reading up on all the new stuff, studying up on all the new information and keeping up on everything new,” he said. “The biggest thing is just read, read, read. Absorb that knowledge so that when you’re working on a truck, you’re not just taking a guess. You’re taking an educated guess based on what you know from the information [from the manufacturer].”

For technicians, that mindset mirrors real-world shop conditions, where accurate diagnostics depend on understanding evolving technology rather than relying on instinct alone.

Showing the Work, Not Just the Result

During the two-day competition, McConnell focused on an area that had held him back in the past. While he had always been able to diagnose and repair the truck, he had not consistently communicated his process to the judges.

That changed this year.

“You know, the first couple times I came here, I was focused more on fixing the truck as fast as possible rather than following the procedures correctly,” he said. “These procedures are ingrained in my mind by now, but I needed to make sure the judge knew that I knew them. So this year I made sure to just tell him every single thing I was doing and I guess it worked out.”

That attention to procedure and transparency proved to be the difference.

Recognition and Results

As all-around Grand Champion, McConnell earned $18,500 in total cash and prizes, a timely bonus with his wedding less than three weeks away.

“Got a little extra spending money now,” he said.

McConnell was recognized during the awards ceremony alongside Rush Enterprises Chairman, President, and CEO Rusty Rush, as well as Clint Bowyer.

2025 Rush Enterprises Tech Skills Rodeo Winners

More than 2,700 technicians completed over 4,600 qualifying tests ahead of this year’s event, with more than 220 competitors advancing to Nashville. Approximately 800 people attended the awards ceremony Tuesday evening.

Nearly $300,000 in cash and prizes were awarded this year, bringing total prize money distributed over the Rodeo’s 20-year history to $3.5 million.

What This Win Represents

McConnell’s journey highlights a message that resonates across service departments and fleets. Skill competitions reward more than speed. They reward preparation, adherence to process, and the ability to clearly communicate technical decisions.

For carriers and service organizations, the Tech Skills Rodeo underscores the value of investing in training and giving technicians opportunities to test their skills at a high level. For technicians, McConnell’s third-time win shows how experience and persistence can turn lessons into results.

Drivers running freight through Georgia will soon have another dependable place to get their trucks serviced and rentals handled, all without leaving the I-75 corridor. Ryder System Inc. has opened a new full-service commercial truck rental and maintenance facility in McDonough, Georgia, expanding its footprint in one of the busiest freight regions in the Southeast.

The new site spans 20000 square feet and sits just south of Atlanta in a logistics corridor that sees heavy daily truck traffic. For drivers moving regional or port freight, this location is positioned to reduce downtime and make routine maintenance easier to schedule around tight delivery windows.

“This expansion reflects Ryder’s investment in high-growth regions where evolving logistics needs demand flexible and tech-enabled solutions,” said Tom Havens, president of Fleet Management Solutions, Ryder. “McDonough’s proximity to Atlanta’s strong infrastructure and thriving industrial base makes it an ideal location for extending our service footprint.”

Why McDonough Matters to Drivers

South Atlanta has become a major crossroads for freight tied to distribution centers, manufacturing, and port traffic. McDonough sits near I-75, which connects drivers directly to Atlanta, Florida, and the Midwest. That makes access to repairs, leasing, and rentals especially important when equipment issues threaten to disrupt a run.

“Strategically positioned near I-75 and major distribution hubs, the facility advances Ryder’s port-to-door logistics service model with rental maintenance and fleet solutions,” Ryder said. “This new location follows Ryder’s recent Nashville area expansion, reinforcing a broader strategy to meet rising demand across high-growth regions. With five full drive-through maintenance bays, the facility will also feature RyderGyde integration for real-time fleet visibility and shop status updates.”

For drivers leased to Ryder or operating Ryder equipment, that means clearer communication around shop status and potentially shorter wait times when trucks need attention.

A Growing Inland Port Means More Freight and More Support

Ryder points to McDonough’s role in Georgia’s expanding logistics network as a key reason for the investment. Henry County has seen steady growth in industrial parks and distribution centers as freight volumes rise across the Southeast.

“This growth complements the Port of Savannah’s record-setting expansion now recognized as the fastest growing port on the U.S. East Coast,” Ryder said. “According to the Georgia Center of Innovation, Georgia’s logistics sector employs more than 250000 people and generates over 83 billion dollars in annual economic impact. McDonough’s industrial parks and distribution centers continue to attract investment, fueling demand for fleet management and transportation services. These factors make it an ideal location for Ryder’s Southeast expansion.”

For drivers, this growth typically translates into more consistent freight lanes but also heavier competition for shop space. Facilities like this one are designed to keep trucks moving as volumes increase.

What Drivers Can Expect at the New Facility

The McDonough location offers services that directly impact time on the road, including commercial truck maintenance, leasing, and rentals. Ryder also expects the site to create local jobs, particularly for technicians, which can help improve service turnaround times.

The new “What Is PC-12?” knowledge hub breaks down what’s coming, why it matters, and how drivers and shop owners can get ready before the new oil category hits the market.

“API PC-12 will be an important change for diesel engines that operate in trucks,” said Julie Wright, Shell Rotella North American brand manager. Shell Rotella wants to help ensure fleets, owner-operators, technicians, and consumers have an easy-to-understand resource that explains what’s changing, why it matters, and how to prepare for the new engine oils. We aim to support the industry through this transition, just as we’ve done with previous category changes.”

What truckers need to know about PC-12

If you’ve been around long enough to remember the switch to CK-4 and FA-4 oils, this is the next evolution in that process. PC-12 (Proposed Category 12) is the American Petroleum Institute’s upcoming oil standard for heavy-duty diesel engines.

It’s being developed to meet tougher emissions rules, higher engine efficiency needs, and stricter durability standards for the next generation of trucks hitting the road in the next few years.

The API expects PC-12 to be officially licensed by January 2027, meaning the oil you’re using today will eventually be replaced by new blends built to handle hotter-running, cleaner-burning diesel engines.

Inside the “What Is PC-12?” knowledge hub

Shell Rotella’s new hub lays out what this all means in plain English. It includes sections like:

The PC-12 Journey: How the new standard came about, what testing is being done, and where things stand in the development process.

Technical Insights: Details on how PC-12 oils are being tested to protect modern engines from wear and heat while maintaining fuel efficiency.

Pressure Systems International (P.S.I.) is making tire maintenance faster and easier with the launch of TireView LIVE Pre-Check, a new feature that lets fleets and drivers instantly see real-time tire pressure and temperature data straight from their mobile devices.

Simple Scan, Instant Results

The system relies on QR tags that come with each TireView LIVE gateway unit. Once paired with a vehicle inside a fleet’s TireView LIVE account, the tag is attached to that unit. From there, drivers and technicians can scan the QR code and immediately view the tire status right in a device browser—no app downloads or account log-ins required.

“Scanning the TireView LIVE Pre-Check QR tag gives drivers and pre-trip inspection personnel real-time tire pressures and temperatures for each tire position, quickly identifying any issues that need attention before they cause delays or in-route maintenance.”

The process is refreshable as well. Simply reloading the browser provides updated tire data without the need for another scan, ensuring crews always have the most current information at hand.

Boosting Pre-Trip Safety and On-Road Efficiency

With Pre-Check, inspections can be performed before a vehicle departs or at any point during the route. This helps fleets spot problems before they escalate, reducing the likelihood of breakdowns that lead to costly downtime.

The feature also supports fleets managing multiple vehicles. Each unit’s tire data appears in a separate browser window, allowing quick comparisons and streamlined monitoring. Registered users can still log into the TireView LIVE mobile app for advanced features if needed.

Lower Costs, Better Service

Unplanned tire issues on the road are one of the most expensive problems fleets face. Repairs at roadside service facilities often come at a premium, not to mention the disruption they cause to delivery schedules and customer satisfaction.

By giving drivers and fleet managers immediate visibility into tire conditions, TireView LIVE Pre-Check helps companies avoid surprise breakdowns and keep vehicles rolling smoothly. It’s a preventative step that pays off in reduced repair costs, better uptime, and improved customer service.

“Unscheduled repairs cost much more than doing maintenance at a preferred service location before deployment. Using TireView LIVE Pre-Check can help prevent these extra costs and boost customer service by providing real-time tire status with a quick scan of the QR tag, with no log-ins or app needed.”

Easy for Current Customers to Implement

P.S.I. has made adoption simple. Existing TireView LIVE customers can request QR tags for any new orders or for units already in service. A step-by-step how-to guide is included to make setup quick and seamless.

With this latest rollout, P.S.I. continues to give fleets smarter, more practical tools to stay safe, efficient, and cost-conscious on the road.
