Truck drivers running freight through major metropolitan areas this summer may want to keep an eye on World Cup schedules.

The tournament got underway on June 11 and will continue through July 19, bringing matches to 16 cities across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. While sporting events regularly generate traffic around stadiums, transportation analysts believe some host cities could experience broader congestion issues that extend beyond game-day traffic.

A recent study from telematics company Geotab suggests the biggest concern may not be how busy a city normally is, but how well it handles sudden spikes in activity.

Not Every Host City Responds the Same Way to Large Events

Ahead of the tournament, Geotab reviewed billions of vehicle data points collected during June and July 2025. The analysis examined how host-city transportation networks performed during periods that included major concerts, sporting events, and other large public gatherings.

Rather than looking only at traffic volume, the company evaluated how quickly road networks recovered after demand increased. That measurement, referred to as resilience, became one of the most important indicators in the study.

A city with heavy daily congestion may still perform relatively well during a major event if traffic conditions return to normal quickly. A city with weaker resilience can experience lingering transportation disruptions long after crowds arrive.

Several Cities Ranked Near the Bottom of the Study

Ten of the sixteen host cities received preparedness scores below 7 out of 10. Foxborough, Massachusetts, which will host matches in the Boston area, earned the highest overall score at 8.01.

Los Angeles, Vancouver, and Toronto landed at the bottom of the rankings, each scoring below 5.

The report also highlighted Los Angeles and Atlanta for particularly poor resilience scores based on how transportation networks responded to large events during the summer of 2025. According to Geotab’s findings, both cities struggled to absorb increased demand without significant traffic disruptions.

For freight carriers and owner-operators, those markets could become more challenging as tournament attendance increases throughout the coming weeks.

Why The Findings Matter for Truck Drivers

Traffic delays around a stadium are rarely the biggest concern for commercial vehicles. The larger issue is how event-related traffic affects surrounding highways, local routes, delivery schedules, and freight movement throughout an entire metropolitan area.

Geotab weighted traffic conditions around stadium locations heavily in its rankings but also included data from the broader metro regions surrounding each venue.

That wider approach provides a better picture of how transportation networks may perform once hundreds of thousands of visitors begin moving through host cities.

Extra Planning Could Help Avoid Delays

Mike Branch, Geotab’s vice president of data and analytics, said resilience scores may provide a useful indicator of how cities will perform during the tournament.

According to Branch, cities with stronger resilience ratings are generally better equipped to handle temporary surges in activity. Areas with lower resilience scores may require additional planning as transportation demand increases.

For truck drivers, that could mean building extra time into schedules, monitoring traffic conditions more closely, and evaluating alternate routes when operating near host markets on match days.

Tournament Continues Through July 19

Matches are scheduled almost daily through July 19, when the championship match will be played in the New York City metropolitan area.

With events taking place throughout North America for more than a month, freight traffic moving through host markets could encounter periodic slowdowns as cities manage increased visitor activity alongside normal transportation demands.

Every driver knows the reality. You can plan your clock perfectly and still burn time hunting for a safe place to shut down. Even a brand-new mega lot with hundreds of spaces barely scratches the surface of the nationwide truck parking shortage. That is why more attention is shifting toward data-driven tools that show where drivers actually stop when hours are running out.

Instead of guessing, technology platforms are now mapping real parking behavior from Class 8 trucks across the country and using that information to guide future investment.

Why Smaller Parking Locations May Matter More Than Mega Lots

Chris Oliver, chief marketing officer at Trucker Path, believes the solution is not always massive parking developments.

“A big piece of land with 500 truck parking spaces might knock a tiny dent in the national truck parking crisis in America,” Oliver said. “Then you’re more likely to be where the driver needs you to be when you need to be there. As those hours of service start to weigh down, you’re not always a half hour away from a giant parking location with 500 spots. You’re often in different places, so having smaller pockets more ubiquitously placed across the geography is, in my opinion, the answer.”

That idea lines up with what drivers experience daily. Parking demand is spread out, especially along ramps and corridors where trucks naturally shut down when clocks expire.

Truck Parking Remains a Top Industry Pain Point

The shortage is not anecdotal. Truck parking ranked as drivers’ second biggest concern and carriers’ ninth biggest concern in the American Transportation Research Institute’s most recent Top Industry Issues list.

Data from the Altitude by Geotab platform shows just how widespread the problem is. Between November 1, 2024, and October 31, 2025, there were approximately 330,000 long-duration heavy-duty truck parking events on interstate ramps nationwide. Indiana, Illinois, and Tennessee topped the list by state, while Atlanta, Indianapolis, and the New York Newark area ranked highest among metro regions.

That data is increasingly important as more than 200 million dollars in federal funding has been set aside specifically for expanding truck parking infrastructure.

How Parking Data Is Being Collected and Analyzed

Trucker Path relies heavily on driver participation. The app currently lists about 29,000 truck parking locations. When drivers enter or exit those areas, the app prompts them to report availability.

According to Oliver, drivers digitally visit those locations about 27 million times per month and submit roughly 1.9 million parking availability reports monthly.

“Parking locations and their availability are one of the most clicked upon data points within Trucker Path, and it’s also the most shared crowdsourced information that we have,” Oliver said.

On the analytics side, Altitude by Geotab pulls from more than 100 billion data points across its vehicle ecosystem. Users can filter parking behavior by vehicle class, engine type, operation style, such as long haul or regional, industry segment, road type, and location. Thresholds can even be set to isolate stops lasting eight hours or longer.

“You can get that level of detail and really start pinpointing some of the context, rather than just anecdotally see a lot of trucks at a particular ramp,” said Nathaniel Veeh, associate vice president of business development at Altitude. “Rather than that, they could actually use that, plus the other measurements behind it to understand what’s actually going on and like, ‘okay, this is a smart investment for me.’”

The platform is used by public agencies and private companies to guide parking investments, inform regulations, improve route planning, and support driver retention.

Real-Time Parking Visibility Is Expanding

Another system, Streetline, recently completed its first year working with the Arizona Department of Transportation. During that time, it logged nearly two million parking events and delivered real-time space availability along Interstate 10.

Streetline reports a 95 percent accuracy rate using camera-based artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cloud analytics. The system accounts for changing weather, lighting, and traffic conditions and feeds information directly into transportation and traveler information platforms. It is now active in eight states.

“For truck drivers, reliable access to safe parking isn’t a convenience; it’s a critical necessity,” said Tony Bradley, president and CEO of the Arizona Trucking Association. “Over the past year, the I-10 Truck Parking Availability System has made a real difference by providing drivers with real-time information to schedule their daily breaks, support hours-of-service compliance, and make safer decisions at the end of a long day. We applaud the Arizona Department of Transportation and Streetline for delivering a viable solution that improves safety and gives drivers greater confidence on the road.”

Finding Parking Matters as Much as Building It

Even when parking exists, drivers still need to locate it in time. Oliver pointed to earlier ATRI research showing drivers spend up to 45 minutes per day searching for parking. Trucker Path’s own user survey from late 2025 found that the number dropped to 19 minutes when drivers used the app.

Trucker Path’s free version shows parking within a default radius. Paid users can see likely availability at upcoming locations based on historical patterns.

“There really are two sides to this,” Oliver said. “One is building enough spaces, which you know is happening and will take a while, but the other side is just making them discoverable and understanding if there’s really any parking there. That second side is where we come in … We’re not building parking spaces; we’re just making them discoverable.”

Fleetworthy has officially revealed its groundbreaking Expedited Inspection feature, available exclusively via Drivewyze by Fleetworthy, setting a new standard for the transportation industry.

Streamlining Inspections with Innovative Technology

“We’re thrilled to announce this industry-first capability, starting with Nevada,” said Shay Demmons, CPO at Fleetworthy. “Our PreClear weigh station bypass customers can activate Expedited Inspection through their ELD, and once done, they’re set with Nevada and any new states as they come on board.”

The service is currently available at weigh stations in Nevada, supported by Geotab and Platform Science ELDs, with plans for expansion into additional states soon.

Redefining Roadside Inspection Efficiency

Expedited Inspection securely automates the transfer of fleet and vehicle registration data to pre-fill inspection forms. Additionally, the solution delivers a driver’s Electronic Record of Duty Status (eRODS) directly to enforcement officers, reducing manual data entry and accelerating inspection times. The process not only lowers driver stress but also minimizes time spent at inspection sites and decreases risks, particularly violations related to Hours of Service data, one of the most common violations.

According to Nevada Highway Patrol Lieutenant Tappan Cornmesser, “By partnering with Drivewyze by Fleetworthy on Expedited Inspection, we’re empowering our officers with tools that reduce manual tasks and speed up inspections. Automating the secure transfer of Hours of Service records and pre-filling inspection forms allows us to focus on enforcement rather than paperwork, saving time for drivers, boosting accuracy, and keeping commerce flowing.”

Aligning Technology with Fleet Performance

Fleetworthy is using its Drivewyze PreClear network, North America’s largest bypass network, to deliver additional value to fleets. Although random inspections still occur, Expedited Inspection offers significant benefits by automating traditionally time-consuming manual tasks, saving fleets and inspectors time, resources, and stress.

“Our focus is on fleet performance, which means providing top-tier safety, automation, and a better driver experience,” said Emilie Campbell, Senior Director of Partner Management at Platform Science. “By now offering Expedited Inspection in our ELD, we are continuing to be at the forefront of the next generation of compliance technology. We look forward to offering this new feature to our industry-leading customers who expect cutting-edge innovation and operational excellence from us.”

Demmons underlined the importance of this innovation to the transportation sector, stating, “By removing the manual handoff of HOS data and automating the inspection workflow, we’re helping fleets get back on the road faster while giving enforcement tools to keep highways safe.”

Fleetworthy’s Expedited Inspection is poised to redefine roadside compliance, creating smoother, more efficient processes for both drivers and inspectors.

The North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) has revealed exciting plans for their next Run on Less event, titled Run on Less – Messy Middle. The 2025 event will spotlight heavy-duty Class 8 trucks—both sleepers and day cabs—operating in long-haul, return-to-base, and over-the-road duty cycles.

Targeting Freight’s Largest-Impact Segment

Based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, NACFE has explained their decision to focus this Run on what they call the “messy middle.”

“We chose to focus this Run on the messy middle and specifically on long-haul, return-to-base, and over-the-road duty cycles because it is the largest emitting market segment and there is confusion surrounding it,” said Mike Roeth, NACFE’s executive director.

Set to take place in September, the event will highlight four distinct powertrain options—diesel, natural gas, battery-electric, and hydrogen fuel cells. Each powertrain type will be represented by three trucks from different fleets, offering valuable real-world data to help better understand the long-haul segment.

“By having trucks with a variety of powertrains, we will be able to capture real-world data and bring some clarity to the long-haul portion of the messy middle,” Roeth noted.

NACFE is actively working with fleets to select an accurate mix of participants to reflect current industry trends. The organization has announced that details about the selected fleets will be shared this spring, followed by on-site visits to each of the 12 fleet locations.

Leveraging Data to Drive Insights

For this Run, like previous ones, each participating truck will be equipped with Geotab telematics devices. Geotab, NACFE’s official data partner for Run on Less – Messy Middle, will enable the event to collect and analyze critical data.

The Run on Less website will also play a central role, featuring updated fleet profiles, video stories, and a dashboard tracking various metrics. Additionally, information and results from the prior four Runs will still be accessible through the site, allowing for comprehensive knowledge sharing.

Educational Bootcamp Series Kicks Off in February

Complementing the September event is a 13-session Bootcamp series, set to begin on Wednesday, February 11, at 1 p.m. EST, with sessions continuing every other week. The Bootcamp is designed to educate and engage industry professionals across various fuel technologies, including diesel, natural gas, battery-electric, and hydrogen-powered vehicles.

Three sessions will specifically cover each powertrain type, followed by dedicated recap workshops. A concluding session will address additional fuel-efficiency technologies critical to the messy middle.

Rachel Ellenberger, NACFE’s industry engagement manager, expressed her enthusiasm for the Bootcamp program, saying, “The NACFE team has been hard at work over the last few months putting together stellar programming for the Run on Less – Messy Middle Bootcamp, and I’m excited to unveil it to our audience.”

She added, “This year’s Bootcamp will include the educational sessions we all know and love along with workshops designed to be more conversational and encourage further audience participation. The agenda is set, and we’re excited to continue to recruit engaging speakers who are talented storytellers in their corner of the industry. I’m looking forward to seeing you in February!”

Participants can register for the Bootcamp today, with ACT News, published by TRC Companies, assisting NACFE in coordinating the program mechanics.

Event Sponsors and Industry Backing

NACFE has already secured two major title sponsors for the upcoming Run—Cummins and Shell. Additional sponsors announced include Chevron, Clean Energy, The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), Eaton, ExxonMobil, FlowBelow, Geotab, PepsiCo, Prologis, and TeraWatt.

“We are grateful to the Title and Event Sponsors that have stepped up so early in the process to help sponsor Run on Less – Messy Middle,” Roeth stated. “The Run is not possible without industry support, and we still need Executive, Title, Event and Supporter Sponsors.”

Don’t Miss Out on the Action

The Run on Less – Messy Middle is poised to be another groundbreaking initiative by NACFE, offering game-changing insights into how fleets can tackle emissions, operational efficiency, and a clearer path through the so-called “messy middle.”

Follow NACFE for updates on participants, sponsor additions, and insights from the Bootcamp! Don’t forget to register for the Bootcamp today and stay ahead of the curve in exploring innovative solutions for freight efficiency.
