Garrett Steenblik’s story is a remarkable tale of resilience and transformation. His path from a health crisis to wellness, while working as an over-the-road trucker, is both inspiring and instructive.

A Wake-up Call on Wheels

Like many truckers, Garrett’s lifestyle led to serious health problems. His job’s sedentary nature, combined with unhealthy eating habits, pushed him into a severe health crisis. “I was trapped in a cycle of daily nausea, excruciating pain and sleepless nights, burdened with diagnoses of fatty liver disease and ulcers,” he shared with The Trucker. Additionally, mental health struggles from past traumas weighed heavily on him.

Seeking solace in unhealthy habits, Garrett’s initial response was to consume multiple Mountain Dews daily and indulge in binge eating. This approach only worsened his health.

Facing the Challenges of the Road

The difficulties Garrett encountered are not unique to him. Many truck drivers face similar health challenges due to the nature of their work, which offers limited support for maintaining good health. “While our society depends on the vital work of the trucking industry, truck drivers have scant support in maintaining their well-being,” Garrett notes. He highlights the grueling work schedules that leave little room for proper meals or exercise.

Reaching a breaking point, Garrett realized he had to make a change. “I decided to change while I was hunched over a toilet bowl, feeling defeated. I realized I was a victim of my own choices, and I refused to remain a hostage to my past.”

A Determined Path to Wellness

Armed with determination, Garrett began an arduous wellness journey. Initially, he focused on dietary changes and exercise, losing significant weight through consistent effort. “I lost my first 100 pounds simply by running in place for 45 minutes a day over 11 months,” he said. However, he soon realized the importance of understanding his body’s nutritional needs, learning to balance caloric intake with energy expenditure.

Switching to a low-carb, whole-food diet, Garrett embraced intermittent fasting and chose healthier foods. This lifestyle shift not only improved his physical health but also alleviated his mental health struggles. “As I improved my diet and exercise, my depression, anxiety and trauma began to lose their grip on my life,” he shares.

A Shared Journey and Support System

Garrett’s wife, Yvonne, played a crucial role in his transformation. As his team driving partner, she provided unwavering support and accountability. “My wife, Yvonne, is a powerful source of accountability and support. She’s played an essential role in my health journey through her love and encouragement.”

Together, they navigated the challenges of maintaining their health on the road, finding creative ways to incorporate exercise into their demanding schedules.

Achieving Milestones and Continuing the Mission

Garrett’s perseverance paid off as he achieved his health goals, eventually reaching a weight of 155 pounds. This remarkable transformation required years of dedication and some medical intervention to address excess skin.

Despite reaching his personal milestone, Garrett continues to face daily challenges in maintaining his health. He is now committed to helping others in the trucking community overcome their health obstacles. “I offer myself as a resource for fellow truckers looking to improve their overall well-being,” he says. Through online forums and support groups, Garrett shares his experiences and encourages others to prioritize their health.

Inspiring a Movement Towards Health

Garrett’s story serves as a powerful call to action for both truckers and the wider community. He hopes to raise awareness about the unique health challenges faced by drivers and inspire positive changes within the industry. “My story of returning to wellbeing while driving is exceptional, but it shouldn’t be,” he asserts. “Draw inspiration from one another and join the movement toward better health in trucking.”

By sharing his personal journey, Garrett Steenblik aims to inspire others to take charge of their health and support wellness initiatives in the trucking industry.

Life on the road as a truck driver can be incredibly rewarding, but it also comes with its fair share of challenges, one of the most prominent being loneliness. Spending long hours behind the wheel, away from friends and family, can take its toll on mental well-being. However, there are steps you can take to make life on the road feel less lonely and more fulfilling. Here are some tips to help you combat loneliness while navigating the highways:

Stay Connected: In today’s digital age, staying connected with loved ones has never been easier. Take advantage of technology by scheduling regular video calls with family and friends. Platforms like Skype, FaceTime, or Zoom allow you to see and hear your loved ones, making the distance feel less significant.

Join Online Communities: The internet is a vast resource, and there are countless online communities dedicated to truck drivers. Join forums, social media groups, or online chat rooms where you can connect with fellow drivers who understand the unique challenges you face. Sharing stories, advice, and camaraderie can help alleviate feelings of isolation.

Listen to Podcasts or Audiobooks: Fill your cab with the voices of others by listening to podcasts or audiobooks during your drives. Whether it’s comedy, news, self-help, or fiction, there’s a podcast or audiobook out there for everyone. Not only will it keep you entertained, but it can also provide a sense of companionship during long stretches of driving.

Explore Your Surroundings: While the primary purpose of your journey may be delivering goods from point A to point B, don’t forget to take time to explore your surroundings. Stop at scenic overlooks, visit local attractions, or take a walk in a nearby park. Getting out of the cab and experiencing new places can help break up the monotony of the road and lift your spirits.

Practice Self-Care: It’s essential to prioritize self-care, both physically and mentally, while on the road. Make time for activities that bring you joy, whether it’s reading, exercising, or enjoying a hobby. Taking care of yourself will not only improve your mood but also boost your overall well-being.

Reach Out for Support: Remember that you’re not alone, and it’s okay to reach out for support when you need it. If feelings of loneliness persist or become overwhelming, don’t hesitate to talk to a trusted friend, family member, or mental health professional. Seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Life on the road as a truck driver may have its challenges, but by implementing these strategies, you can make it a more enjoyable and fulfilling experience. From staying connected with loved ones to exploring new places and prioritizing self-care, there are plenty of ways to combat loneliness and find contentment on the open road. What are some of the ways you handle life on the road?

Results from a 2023 survey shed light on the challenges faced by company drivers in managing stress. According to the survey, 36% of drivers believe they handle stress well, with only 1% feeling extremely confident in their stress management abilities. However, a significant majority, over half of the respondents, expressed that they perceive themselves as handling stress somewhat poorly or poorly.

In contrast to a traditional office setting, where finding a mentor or confidant is relatively straightforward, the trucking industry can present unique challenges. For drivers spending most of their day driving, the search for emotional support or advice can be daunting.

“I think the reality is we all need resources like that in our lives,” said Phil Wilt, president of American Central Transport (ACT), “and probably in the trucking space, it is probably overlooked the most. Sometimes just having a person to listen, or a person that I can go to and say, ‘I’m struggling with this,’ and they can speak truth to me.”

The survey also revealed that 76% of respondents believe drivers facing mental health issues are unlikely to seek help from a doctor or a professional. Only 6% thought drivers would actively seek assistance, while 16% remained unsure. Additionally, 16% expressed confidence that drivers experiencing mental health problems could find the necessary level of help, with over half expressing a lack of confidence and 32% being uncertain.

Addressing this gap in support, ACT took a proactive step last year by introducing a life coach to serve as an emotional resource and confidant for its employees.

“It’s not a counselor; it’s a coach,” Wilt said. “The stress of being out on the road, the stress from being away from your family, if you have a family. The lifestyle is hard, and that’s why we’ve tried to step in the gap and kind of call that out and figure out a way that we could help people that may be struggling that we don’t even know are struggling with that type of stuff.”

Meet the life coach Carnegie, a native of Jamaica, who arrived in the U.S. on a track scholarship. With over seven years of experience as a Student Success Coach in the Shawnee Mission School District, where he served ten schools and approximately 30,000 individuals (including families and students), he is no stranger to bridging the gap between problems and potential solutions. His background positions him as a valuable asset in providing much-needed support to truck drivers facing the unique challenges of the road.

“Honestly, for me, it’s life-on-life investing. I think this role here at ACT is so special, so unique, that we care about our employees not just showing up and being at work, but their mental health, their wellbeing and who they are as people,” Carnegie said. “My thing is I listen to care, not to share. I think we live in a day and age where a lot of times, when we’re talking to people, they’re already formulating a response and you’re not really actively listening. I really pride myself on that. It’s funny because a lot of times the folks around here, when I ask them about their family or that event they had, or that special occasion, they’re always kind of blown away. Like, ‘Hold on. Dre, you remember that?’ Yeah, because I’m listening when you talk. There’s no hidden agenda. That’s kind of the secret sauce.”

Truck driving, a demanding profession, often exposes drivers to heightened levels of stress, especially during the holidays. Long hours on the road, traffic congestion, and tight schedules can impact a trucker’s mental and physical well-being. It becomes even more crucial for truckers to prioritize relaxation and stress management during these challenging times. In this blog post, we will explore effective techniques that can be seamlessly incorporated into a trucker’s routine to navigate stress, both behind the wheel and during downtime.

Tips for Staying Calm in Stressful Situations, Especially During the Holidays:

Deep Breathing – Practice slow, deep breaths, focusing on inhaling and exhaling fully, even during holiday traffic. This technique activates the body’s relaxation response.

Mindful Observation – Pay close attention to surroundings, focusing on the details of the road, sounds, and sights, diverting attention away from stressors during holiday congestion.

Affirmations – Repeat positive affirmations like “I am calm and in control” or “I can handle any challenge” to shift mindset and alleviate holiday stress.

Aromatherapy – Utilize calming scents like lavender essential oil during holiday travel to induce relaxation and relieve stress.

Meditation – Find a quiet place during holiday breaks, focusing on breath or a specific point of focus for relaxation and inner calm.

Additional Activities to Manage Holiday Stress:

Exercise – Engage in physical activity during breaks or off-duty hours to release tension and boost mood, essential during the holiday season.

Hobbies and Recreation – Dedicate time to activities you love during the holidays, such as reading or listening to music, to significantly reduce stress levels.

Clean Eating – it is important to fuel your body and mind with nutrient-dense food to help you navigate stress. This includes drinking plenty of water!

Good Sleeping Habits – Making sure you get the rest you need is imperative to a healthy mindset!

Prioritizing relaxation and stress management is essential for truckers, especially during the stressful holiday season. Incorporating quick techniques on the road and more involved methods during downtime can significantly reduce stress levels and promote a healthier and more fulfilling trucking career.

Remember, taking care of your mental and physical health is just as important as meeting your professional responsibilities, particularly during the holiday rush. Invest in your well-being and enjoy a more fulfilling and relaxed trucking journey! Take the time to prioritize relaxation and nurture your mental and physical health for a more balanced and enjoyable trucking journey, especially during the holiday season.

The holiday season is a time of joy, togetherness, and celebration. It’s a time when families and friends come together to create lasting memories and enjoy the warmth of each other’s company. For many truckers, however, this season can be bittersweet, as they find themselves on the road, delivering the goods that make everyone else’s holidays possible. Staying connected with loved ones during this time is not just important, it’s essential.

In this blog post, we’ll explore why maintaining those connections is crucial year-round and especially during the holidays. We’ll also provide practical tips for truckers to ensure they can stay in touch with their loved ones.

Why Staying Connected Is Important Year-Round and During the Holidays

Emotional Support: Truckers often face long hours on the road, navigating through various weather conditions and coping with the stress of deadlines. The emotional support of loved ones can be a lifeline, providing comfort, motivation, and a sense of purpose.

Mental Well-being: Loneliness and isolation can take a toll on mental health. Staying connected with family and friends can alleviate feelings of depression and anxiety, providing a positive impact on a trucker’s overall well-being.

Strengthening Relationships: Consistently communicating with loved ones helps strengthen the bonds between family members. It ensures that everyone stays connected and aware of each other’s lives, making the moments spent together during the holidays even more precious.

Shared Moments: Missing important family gatherings or holiday celebrations can be tough for truckers. Staying in touch allows them to share in the joy and festivities, even from afar.

Practical Tips for Staying Connected

Communication Tools: In today’s digital age, there are numerous ways to stay in touch. Truckers away from home can use video calls, instant messaging, and social media platforms to connect with their loved ones. Apps like Skype, Zoom, WhatsApp, Snapchat, or FaceTime can bridge the gap.

Schedule Regular Calls: Setting a routine for communication can be comforting. Plan regular phone or video calls with loved ones and stick to these schedules as much as possible.

Share Photos and Videos: Capture moments from your journey and share them with your family. It can help them feel more involved in your life and experiences.

Keep a Journal: Writing a journal about your daily experiences on the road can serve as a personal connection between you and your loved ones, as well as help you feel more connected to yourself. Jot down your experiences and thoughts on breaks and share them with loved ones as you can.

Plan Visits: If possible, plan your routes to coincide with visits to your hometown or the places where your family and friends live. This way, you can spend quality time with them during your travels.

Send Gifts: Surprise your loved ones with thoughtful gifts from the road. Even a small, heartfelt gesture can go a long way in showing you care, and in today’s digital age it’s easier than ever to send e-gift cards or have gifts delivered as soon as next day.

Mental Health Resources for Truckers

For those truckers feeling alone, depressed, or even just extra stressed over the holidays, below are a few resources to help should you need it. Remember, asking for help and support is a sign of strength, not a sign of weakness. Truckers should not hesitate to utilize these resources if they are feeling overwhelmed or need someone to talk to during the holiday season or at any time. Loneliness and stress are common in this profession, and there are people and organizations willing to provide assistance and a listening ear.

Mental Health America: This nonprofit organization provides resources for mental health support. They offer a confidential online mental health screening tool, which can be a useful first step for truckers dealing with stress, anxiety, or depression.
Mental Health America

BetterHelp Therapy Services: Truckers often deal with unique stressors, and talking them through with a licensed professional can really help, however, many truckers schedules make regular office visits tricky. Services like BetterHelp offer remote counseling sessions so you can get the help you need no matter where you are.
BetterHelp

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: Loneliness and depression can sometimes lead to thoughts of self-harm. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline provides 24/7 support and resources for anyone in crisis, including truckers.

Life on the road as a trucker can be demanding and isolating. The long hours, tight schedules, and constant travel can take a toll on one’s mental health. In this blog post, we will explore the mental health challenges faced by truckers and provide valuable resources and strategies to help them manage stress and well-being effectively, especially during National Suicide Prevention Month. Whether you’re a trucker yourself or someone who cares about their mental health, this information is essential.

Understanding the Challenges

Truckers often encounter several mental health challenges unique to their profession, including, but not limited to:

Isolation – Long hours spent alone on the road can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Stress – Tight deadlines, traffic, and unpredictable weather conditions can cause high levels of stress.

Sleep Deprivation – Irregular sleep patterns and insufficient rest can result in fatigue and mental exhaustion.

Unhealthy Lifestyle – Limited access to nutritious food and exercise, coupled with a sedentary job, can lead to physical health issues that impact mental well-being.

Financial Worries – The pressure to meet financial responsibilities can add to the overall stress.

Strategies for Managing Mental Health

Establish a Routine – Try to maintain a consistent daily schedule, including regular sleep patterns and meal times, to regulate your body’s internal clock.

Stay Connected – Use technology to stay in touch with loved ones and fellow truckers. Social support is crucial for mental health.

Mindful Breaks – Take short breaks during your journey to stretch, practice deep breathing, or engage in mindfulness exercises to reduce stress.

Healthy Eating – Plan your meals and snacks in advance, opting for nutritious options. Avoid excessive caffeine and sugary foods.

Exercise – Incorporate physical activity into your routine whenever possible. Simple stretches and exercises can help combat the effects of a sedentary job.
