New Hampshire Attorney General John M. Formella announced that the state’s Department of Justice is partnering with the National Traffic Law Center, the New Hampshire Department of Safety, and other traffic safety partners on the initiative, which is intended to improve highway safety.

Program Focuses on CDL Conviction Reporting

The state is participating in a $7.9 million pilot project funded by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

According to the attorney general’s office, the program is intended to increase awareness of federal and state prohibitions against masking commercial driver convictions, improve the accuracy of commercial driver conviction reporting, and help ensure disqualified commercial drivers are removed from the nation’s roadways.

Statewide Working Group to Lead the Initiative

As part of the program, the New Hampshire Department of Justice will lead a statewide working group made up of representatives from agencies involved in investigating, prosecuting, adjudicating, licensing, and tracking commercial driver offenses.

The group will focus on:

• Providing education and training for prosecutors, law enforcement officers, judges, clerks, and traffic safety professionals on federal and state CDL requirements, including anti-masking laws.
• Improving statewide compliance with federal reporting requirements.
• Developing a state implementation plan to ensure the accurate and timely transfer of information from roadside enforcement through the conviction reporting process.

Attorney General Highlights Highway Safety

Formella said the partnership is intended to strengthen coordination among prosecutors, law enforcement, the courts, and state and federal partners responsible for enforcing commercial driver’s license laws.

“Traffic safety is public safety,” Formella said. “This partnership will strengthen coordination among prosecutors, law enforcement, the courts, and our state and federal partners to ensure that commercial driver’s license laws are enforced consistently and accurately.”

On June 25, employees from ATG’s Manchester dealership delivered 1,040 breakfast bundles to the two organizations. Each bundle was designed to feed up to eight people and included breakfast sandwiches, English muffins, cereal, peanut butter, and fresh produce.

The effort is part of ATG’s ongoing Haulin’ 4 Hunger initiative, which supports food banks and community organizations across New England.

Meeting a Growing Need

According to the organizations involved, the donations come as many families and older adults continue to face food insecurity. In New Hampshire, approximately one in seven children and more than 10 percent of seniors experience food insecurity, increasing the demand for emergency food assistance throughout the year.

“Food donations like the Haulin’ 4 Hunger drive are about much more than stocking shelves. They help us respond immediately when someone is facing hunger,” said Kristin Kostecki, Vice President of Meals on Wheels of Hillsborough County.

Kostecki said pantry bags often provide critical support for older adults and adults with disabilities who are waiting for meal services to begin, stretching food between deliveries, or dealing with an unexpected crisis.

Haulin’ 4 Hunger Continues to Grow

ATG launched Haulin’ 4 Hunger to support communities served by its dealerships throughout New England. In addition to the fresh meal donation in Manchester, the program makes quarterly deliveries of nonperishable food to local pantries near dealership locations in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Vermont.

The initiative also provides annual fresh meal donations each December to organizations near ATG’s Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, dealership.

“We are proud to continue expanding our fresh meal donation program to more local organizations that help bridge the gap for those struggling to put food on their table,” said Kevin G. Holmes, President and CEO of Advantage Truck Group. “Haulin’ 4 Hunger is a reflection of what is possible when our employees, customers, and business partners come together to support our communities.”

Employees Drive the Program’s Success

ATG credits much of the program’s impact to employee volunteers who organize, package, and deliver the donations.

“Our employees are the backbone of Haulin’ 4 Hunger,” said Sarah Harrington, ATG’s Director of Marketing. “They volunteer their time to sort, package, and deliver food. They care deeply about our communities, and their dedication is what makes this program possible.”

As the program continues to expand, ATG says it plans to increase the number of meals delivered to families and individuals facing food insecurity throughout the communities it serves.

ATG started Haulin’ 4 Hunger in 2012, and since then, the effort has delivered more than 98,000 meals. The mission keeps expanding, thanks to the hands and horsepower of ATG employees, customers, and business partners.

Fresh Turkey Meals Delivered in Convoy Style

On December 11, ATG crews will fire up two truck caravans loaded with 4,400 fresh turkey meals and all the holiday fixings. The deliveries will roll into eight community organizations throughout Worcester and nearby towns, including Boys and Girls Club of Worcester, Friendly House, Jeremiah’s Inn, Marlborough Community Cupboard, South Worcester Neighborhood Center, St. Anne’s Human Services, Veterans Inc., and Westborough Food Pantry. Drivers will hand off meals directly to each site, continuing a tradition many look forward to every year.

More Deliveries Through December

Between December 12 and 23, ATG will keep the wheels turning by sending thousands more meals to pantries near ATG dealerships across Southeastern and Western Massachusetts, along with locations in New Hampshire and Vermont. This round focuses on non-perishable items like canned chicken, stuffing, ramen, canned peas, and dessert packs. The donations will support Lancaster Food Pantry, LISTEN Food Pantry, Our Community Table, Our Place Drop-In Center, Our Daily Bread, and Seabrook Food Pantry. This quarter alone, the program will distribute more than 12,000 meals.

A Program That Keeps Growing

Now in its thirteenth year, Haulin’ 4 Hunger continues to widen its reach. ATG even launched its first fresh meal donation in New Hampshire this past June, delivering to a pantry near its Manchester location.

“The holidays are particularly challenging for those who are unsure where they will get their next meal,” said Sarah Harrington, director of marketing, ATG. “Continued support from our Haulin’ 4 Hunger donations makes a meaningful difference for local food pantries and the people they support.”

The effort is supported by a wide group of business partners, including Global Partners, Dennis K. Burke, UniBank, Cummins, G. Lopes Construction, Railers HC, and SelecTrucks of New England.

In addition, the site will have nine plug-in power pedestals, providing 34 electrified parking spaces with electrical and cable TV attachments.

This project, the first of its kind in the state, aims to significantly reduce emissions and benefit both truckers and the environment.

“By providing truckers an external source of electricity, drivers taking their mandated 10-hour rest periods can use their vehicle’s cabin amenities (such as lights and air conditioning), space heaters and electronics without needing to idle the engine for power,” Scott told the DES executive council in a request for funds in September.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the state’s Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust Fund are providing funding for the electrification effort. The funding is a result of the federal Diesel Emission Reduction Act, which supports projects that reduce harmful emissions from older diesel engines.

In 2017, New Hampshire received approximately $31 million from Volkswagen as part of a $15 billion settlement with the federal government. This settlement was reached after New Hampshire filed a complaint against Volkswagen for violating the Clean Air Act. The purpose of the funds is to support state-led projects that reduce nitrogen oxide emissions from vehicles.

Shorepower Technologies, a company based in Hillsboro, Oregon, has been contracted to install power pedestals at the future truck stop site. They offer truck stop electrification services for around 1,800 truck parking spaces at 60 locations across the U.S.

“Neighboring areas will benefit from a reduction in noise and vibration from the engines being turned off during these long periods,” Scott said. “Drivers utilizing electrified truck stops have also reported more restful experiences, which may aid in driver safety and driver retention, which is critical for easing ongoing supply chain burdens.”
