This site marks the 25th service stop to reopen under the $450 million initiative to remodel and elevate all 27 service areas on the New York State Thruway. It’s important to note that this transformation is entirely funded by private investment, with no toll or tax dollars used in the construction.

Frank G. Hoare, Esq., the Executive Director of the Thruway Authority, expressed the importance of this milestone. “We’ve reached another milestone in the service area redevelopment project, as customers can now fully experience new service areas along I-90 from Albany to Buffalo, in both directions,” he shared. “Modernizing our transportation system is a priority for the Thruway Authority to improve the travel experience for customers and enhance safety and reliability.”

Additionally, four high-speed Level 3 EV chargers are slated to be installed at a later phase, supporting sustainable travel.

This modernized travel stop offers a range of conveniences for travelers, including popular dining options like Starbucks, Wendy’s, Popeye’s, and Mountain State Market—all open 24/7. Additional amenities include expanded restrooms, EV charging stations, a drive-through service, and increased parking spaces for trucks.

Highlighting the unique charm of West Virginia, the plaza also features the Tamarack Artisan Shop. Designed to cater to diverse visitors—families, tourists, and professional truckers alike—it showcases local craftsmanship and the essence of the Mountain State.

Located near Exit 45 on Interstate 77, this state-of-the-art facility embodies the forward-thinking spirit of the region. West Virginia’s Governor Jim Justice expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I’m truly blown away by how this plaza has turned out—it’s even more than we imagined. A few years ago, no one would’ve dreamed West Virginia would be featured in top travel guides or become a top tourist destination. Now, people from all over the world are coming to experience Almost Heaven. We needed to update our travel plazas to match the excitement and energy of our visitors, and that’s exactly what we’ve done. This isn’t just a pit stop; it’s our opportunity to show off the beauty and spirit of West Virginia.”

The ambitious renovation was part of a $152 million improvement initiative approved by the Parkways Authority in May 2022. Spanning three fiscal years, this investment aimed to reimagine the turnpike’s travel plazas based on feedback from a 2021 survey of travelers using the route.

The Beckley Travel Plaza wasn’t the only destination under transformation. A $122 million contract was awarded in February 2023 to Paramount Builders LLC from St. Albans for the demolition and redesign of both the Beckley and Bluestone travel plazas. Travelers can also look forward to the opening of the Bluestone Travel Plaza, which is scheduled to debut in mid-January.

With a fresh new design and enhanced features, the Beckley Travel Plaza is set to leave a lasting impression on visitors and showcase the vibrant, evolving landscape of West Virginia.
