James “JD” Chasteen, Shaw Industries Group; Scott “Scottie” Edwards, Primo Brands Corp.; Kenny White, AutoZone; and Donald “Todd” Young, Marathon Petroleum Co., were recognized for their contributions to the profession, earning the admiration of peers, supervisors, and customers alike. Here’s a closer look at each of these outstanding professionals.

James “JD” Chasteen – 54 Years of Safe Driving

“Being accepted in the Driver Hall of Fame is a huge honor,” says JD. “I strive to exceed expectations and always aim to leave a lasting impression of kindness and professionalism.”

A driver since 1969, Chasteen has amassed an extraordinary 5.8 million miles without accidents, with three million of those miles driven during his 29 years at Shaw Industries Group. His exceptional career includes a commitment to the daily practice of the Smith System of defensive driving and recognition as the National Safety Council’s Best Safe Driver of the Year in 2022.

Outside of work, JD enjoys walking his dog, exploring metal detecting as a hobby, and spending time with his family and church community.

Scott “Scottie” Edwards – Dedicated to Safety and Community

“I strive to maintain a positive attitude and help others. Representing my company and profession with the highest standards is a personal point of pride,” Scottie explains.

Over his 32-year career, primarily spent with Primo Brands Corp., Edwards has driven 3.1 million accident-free miles. Devoted to safety, he keeps his truck immaculate and works tirelessly to mentor peers on fostering a safe work environment.

An active member of his community, Edwards is a volunteer fireman and participates in Wreaths Across America, delivering wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery. When he’s not on the road, he focuses on fitness, family hikes, and quality time with his dog.

Kenny White – Six Decades of Safe Driving Excellence

“I strive to be safe every day because I want to come back to my family and do not want to hurt anyone. I thank God for watching over me each day and keeping me safe,”  says Kenny. With 61 years of driving and 3.5 million miles without accidents or injuries, Kenny’s dedication to safety and preparation is unmatched. His commitment began with his father teaching him to drive and was honed during his military service, where he transported heavy equipment.

Kenny is a family man with two children, seven grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. He’s also a car enthusiast, active in his church, and president of a local retiree group at his favorite donut shop.

Donald “Todd” Young – Marathon’s Trusted Driver

“Sleep and proper rest have been crucial to my safety,” shares Todd. “I’m always focused on leaving a positive impression for myself and my company.”

For 44 years—with 38 of those at Marathon Petroleum Co.—Todd has achieved over 3 million accident-free miles, bolstered by extensive training in defensive driving and workplace safety. A certified Smith Driving System trainer, he leads by example.

Todd’s dedication to others extends beyond the road as he volunteers with the American Red Cross and participates in disaster relief efforts in his community. He enjoys camping, hunting, and spending time with his family on his days off.

Congratulations to JD, Scottie, Kenny, and Todd for their well-deserved induction into the 2025 NPTC Driver Hall of Fame. An owner-operator in NCI’s Reefer 48 state division, Williams has been with the company for over 20 years, embodying the dedication and professionalism that have made NCI a standout in the trucking industry.

“What makes Perry so valuable is he is always up for a challenge, no matter how bad or good it is. ” He understands the industry, with its highs and lows,” stated Jason Greer, Director of Livestock at NCI. “He always says, ‘that’s trucking.’ The fact is, you can give him a task and walk away knowing he will do everything in his power to get it done the right way, and if not, he lets everyone know what he needs to get it done.”

A Legacy of Versatility and Skill

Since joining NCI in June 2003, Williams has earned a reputation for versatility and professionalism. Over the years, he has worked in multiple divisions, including livestock, regional boxed beef, local flatbed, tallow, and hides, consistently demonstrating his ability to adapt.

Williams has achieved an extraordinary safety milestone, logging an impressive two million safe miles throughout his time with NCI.

His accomplishments include:

• Being named Driver of the Month for Kansas in 2023.

• Earning NCI’s Driver of the Month award in May 2024.

• Representing NCI as a company ambassador at National Beef’s corporate office in Kansas City, Missouri.

A Work Ethic Built on Strong Values

According to Jason Greer, Williams’ strong work ethic is rooted in lessons learned from his father.

“His father was all about customer service as he worked in the food industry, helping to get a famous West Coast favorite eatery to where it is today,” Greer explained. “From the way you looked, dressed, and communicated at the job. Perry still holds true to his father’s core values.”

Through his unwavering professionalism, exceptional communication skills, and positive attitude, Williams consistently sets the standard in the transportation industry. Known for his willingness to assist and his dedication to excellence, he is a valued member of the NCI team, consistently described as “Elite.”

Longtime Ruan driver Dean Key has been crowned the 2023 Driver of the Year. Based in Milbank, South Dakota, Key has been with Ruan since 1996, amassing a total of four decades of professional driving experience.

Ruan recognizes Key as a leader with an exceptional grasp of the transportation sector’s complexities, paired with a steadfast commitment to the highest professional standards both on and off the road.

Starting in March, the pursuit for Ruan’s 2023 Driver of the Year involved evaluating 149 drivers from Ruan’s 300 operations, selected for their stellar safety records, extensive industry background, top-notch customer service, and more. Following a rigorous evaluation, 12 individuals were inducted into the 2023 Winners’ Circle.

These esteemed drivers were honored at Ruan’s Des Moines, Iowa, headquarters, where they toured the campus and discussed key topics like safety, technology, and recruitment. The celebration included networking with leaders and support teams, marking each honoree’s achievement.

Dean Key was awarded the Driver of the Year title during a ceremony at the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates. Each member of the Winners’ Circle received a trophy and a cash award, with Key taking home a trophy, $5,000, and the coveted 2023 Driver of the Year honor.

Recognizing Ruan’s 2023 Operation of the Year

Ruan also celebrated its 2023 Operation of the Year. Each Ruan vice president of operations nominated top performers from their business units. From ten distinguished finalists, Ruan’s executive leadership team selected three Winners’ Circle honorees based on criteria such as customer satisfaction, innovation, financial success, and adherence to the “Megasafe” culture.

The Huntsville, Alabama, operation, which supports Target under the leadership of Dedicated Transportation Manager Mike Steely, was named the 2023 Operation of the Year. Ruan ensures the safe and efficient delivery of general merchandise and milk to stores. This accolade includes a trophy and an upcoming celebration for all team members involved.
