The affected ELDs are:

• Sahara ELD – model GDELD1000; ELD identifier SAHELD; provider Sahara ELD LLC

According to FMCSA, these devices no longer meet the minimum requirements outlined in Title 49 CFR Appendix A to Subpart B of Part 395.

If you’re currently using one of the affected devices, here’s what you need to do:

1. Stop using the revoked ELD immediately. Switch to paper logs or compliant logging software to record your hours of service.
2. Replace the device with a registered ELD before January 20, 2026, to stay in compliance.

Staying on top of ELD compliance is crucial. Using an unapproved device can lead to violations during inspections and put your hours of service records at risk. Make sure your replacement device is fully compliant and on the FMCSA’s approved list.

The DOT has updated the platform to be more user-friendly for drivers, introduced a section for complaints against brokers who violate transparency rules, and renamed the complaint hub. While these changes are a positive step, truckers and fleet managers still see room for improvement.

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA), which has long criticized the National Consumer Complaint Database as “ineffective” and poorly named, says the improvements are noticeable.

“OOIDA members have already noticed a significant improvement in the general display, user interface, and structure of the NCCDB website since the initial changes were announced in September,” the association wrote in comments signed by President Todd Spencer. “These overdue updates will assist drivers navigating the NCCDB and help them accurately file complaints.”

DOT’s Pro-Trucker Initiatives

Back in June, the DOT announced nine “Pro-Trucker” initiatives, one of which focused on modernizing the NCCDB. The goal was to migrate the database to a more modern, mobile-friendly platform, making it easier for drivers to report violations. The first set of updates went live in late September.

One of the most meaningful changes for drivers is the addition of a dedicated section for complaints against moving companies, trucking and bus companies, substance abuse professionals, electronic logging device providers, and property brokers.

Truck drivers have long raised concerns about brokers failing to comply with Regulation 371.3, which requires brokers to maintain transaction records and provide parties with access to those records. The updated system now explicitly allows drivers to report these violations.

“Is your complaint about a property broker? This could include a property broker failing to maintain transaction records or financial accounts with the required information, failing to maintain FMCSA registration or insurance, misrepresenting services, or conducting improper rebating or compensation practices,” FMCSA stated on the website.

OOIDA Pushes for Additional Enhancements

While acknowledging the improvement, OOIDA says there are additional changes needed.

“We especially thank USDOT for expanding the complaint categories to specifically include property brokers,” Spencer wrote. “However, FMCSA must add, ‘Refusing to Provide the Records of the Delivery’ under ‘Additional Details’ in the Property Broker section. We are optimistic these initial changes will contribute to a modern platform that will streamline the filing process, improve response timeliness, and initiate enforcement action when applicable.”

The DOT also announced in October that the NCCDB will be renamed the “FMCSA Complaint Center Records.” OOIDA has long requested a name that is easier for drivers to identify.

“We believe ongoing NCCDB changes can further be supplemented by choosing a more appropriate name for the system,” Spencer wrote. “The proposed new name remains misleading and only signifies a minimal connection to the trucking industry. Possible suggestions for a more logical name would be the National Truck Safety and Compliance Database or the Commercial Trucking Complaint Center. A more identifiable name would help raise the platform’s awareness among professional truckers and improve its utilization.”

The Need for Transparency and Responsiveness

OOIDA also stressed that the system needs to provide drivers with more feedback after filing a complaint. Without confirmation or progress updates, truckers are less likely to report violations.

“FMCSA should provide a confirmation that the complaint has been accepted, as well as real-time updates that monitor the complaint’s progress through the system,” Spencer wrote. “This would help drivers know where their complaint stands and provide a better understanding of FMCSA’s response level.”

While the updates are a step in the right direction, truck drivers and fleet managers continue to urge the DOT to make the complaint platform more transparent, responsive, and fully tailored to the needs of professional drivers.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer highlighted the importance of this work in Michigan’s larger infrastructure plan: “Across Michigan, we are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy, helping Michiganders go to work, drop their kids off at school and run errands safely,” she said. “By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired, or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges, supporting thousands of good-paying, local jobs without raising taxes by a dime.”

This closure is part of a broader effort to modernize rest areas across the state, ensuring drivers have safe, updated facilities when traveling Michigan highways. Truckers and other travelers should plan accordingly until the Bay City Rest Area reopens in May 2026.

While crews will halt lane closures, construction workers may still be present in many work zones, so staying alert remains critical. TDOT reminds drivers that posted speed limits still apply. Those caught speeding in active work zones face fines ranging from $250 to $500, additional court fees, and potentially higher insurance premiums.

A Morning on Interstate 81

On the morning of April 23, while traveling northbound on Interstate 81 between Roanoke and Harrisonburg, Va., Combs noticed sparks flying from a GMC pickup truck in front of him.

“I thought it was chains dragging,” Combs said. “When I saw it sparking a little too much, I was flashing my lights on and off; I was trying to get him to stop before he passed another truck, and then the sparks got even worse.”

Combs’ persistence paid off, as the driver of the pickup truck began to pull over.

“I knew something was gonna happen,” Combs said.

Just as the truck started to stop, its right front wheel detached completely. Fortunately, the driver managed to bring the truck to the side of the road safely.

“Sparks went everywhere,” Combs said. “It went from a few sparks to, when it hit the ground, it was like somebody set a fire underneath it.”

A Commitment to Safety

Combs, a seasoned professional with 16 years of driving experience, immediately pulled over to check on the driver and two passengers. He ensured they were unharmed and verified that the vehicle had not caught fire.

“I’m always gonna stop,” Combs said, emphasizing his dedication to safety and helping others whenever needed.

Federal regulations for commercial motor vehicles have been relaxed to support ongoing relief efforts. This applies to vehicles directly involved in transporting supplies or offering services vital to restoring essential goods and infrastructure. Importantly, these waivers extend to qualifying carriers or drivers regardless of the origin of their trip, provided their work directly supports the emergency response in Kentucky.

Key Notes on Direct Assistance

• Direct assistance does not include long-term reconstruction efforts or general commercial deliveries, even if a minor portion of the load consists of supplies for emergency relief.
• Assistance ends once the focus shifts from addressing immediate threats to life and property toward routine operations or infrastructure rehabilitation.
• Drivers must still adhere to hours of service regulations, requiring a 10-hour rest period after reaching a total of 14 working hours across emergency operations and everyday activities.

Motor carriers and operators currently under an out-of-service order are not permitted to operate within the scope of this emergency relief declaration.

Jason Corino

On November 29, 2023, while driving on US 491 in Cortez, Colorado, Jason Corino found himself in the middle of a horrifying road rage incident that escalated into an attack on a police officer. Corino saw a suspect get out of their vehicle and open fire on the officer during a traffic stop. Acting without hesitation, Corino slammed on his brakes to halt traffic behind him, potentially saving numerous lives. His truck’s camera captured the shocking incident and became key evidence in the investigation. Tragically, the officer did not survive, and the suspect was later fatally shot by law enforcement. Corino’s quick thinking and decisive actions were instrumental in protecting others on the road and assisting the investigation.

Michael Dorsey

September 26, 2024, was a day of disaster in Erwin, Tennessee, as Hurricane Helene’s floodwaters rose rapidly and overwhelmed the area. Loading his flatbed truck at the time, Michael Dorsey quickly realized the danger. He allowed 10 people seeking safety to find refuge on his truck trailer. The floodwaters soon swept the group away, forcing everyone to cling to the trailer for survival. Knocked unconscious at one point, Dorsey did not give up. His bravery and determination ultimately saved six lives in a chaotic and life-threatening situation. Dorsey is a shining example of resilience and selflessness in the face of disaster.

Daljit Sohi

On November 29, 2024, while driving from Banff to Salmon Arm, Canada, Daljit Sohi witnessed a woman accidentally drop her purse at a rest stop. The purse contained $1,100 in cash, a gold chain, and essential personal belongings. Sohi selflessly retrieved the purse and pursued the woman and her family for three hours to return it. When he finally caught up and gave the purse back intact, the woman offered him a reward, which he declined. Sohi’s act of kindness and integrity underscores his immense generosity, earning him a well-deserved spot as a Highway Angel.
