The massive Red Fir, known as the “Silver Belle,” started its journey in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest in Nevada. From there, Porter took the wheel and guided the tree more than thirty seven hundred miles to Washington D C. It was the type of trip that reminds the country just how much trucking keeps traditions alive.

A Run Built on Pride

“It was an absolute honor to represent Knight Swift and the trucking community for this year’s U S Capitol Christmas Tree tour,” Porter said. “The holiday season is a special time of the year, so to have the opportunity to spread holiday cheer to communities all across our great country as we made our way to D C was truly an unforgettable experience.”

For the twelfth year in a row, Kenworth supported the annual tree program by supplying the truck. This year’s T680 featured a custom wrap celebrating the Spirit of the Silver State, complete with a sunset scene over Nevada’s forests.

From the Shop to the Open Road

Before earning his CDL, Porter spent his career turning wrenches as a mechanic. Seven years ago, he joined Knight Swift’s flatbed division, where he has spent most of his time handling oversized loads.

“I started my career in transportation as a mechanic, servicing cars and later heavy trucks, and realized I enjoyed driving big rigs more than I liked working in the shop,” Porter said. “I love being on the road, traveling the country, and the flexibility I have in my schedule working with Knight Swift. Truck drivers serve a pivotal role in our nation’s economy, and this tour is an excellent opportunity to highlight an important industry in trucking while kicking off the holiday season. I’m proud to be a part of it.”

Because Porter regularly hauls extended trailers, he was a strong fit for a load this long. The tree traveled on an eighty-foot Hale trailer, which took careful planning and skilled handling at every community stop.

Moving a National Icon

“From law enforcement leading the convoy to the logistical planners and all the sponsors involved, it was truly a team effort to safely make this three thousand seven hundred mile journey across the country possible,” Porter said. “I’ve never been involved in a transport with so much attention, which added a bit of pressure, but it also made the experience that much more rewarding. Everywhere we went, people were excited, waving, and taking photos. You could really feel the pride and joy this tree brought to communities along the way.”

The Kenworth T680 used for the haul included the DigitalVision Mirror system, which gave Porter clearer visibility and helped with tight turns in crowded city stops.

“The most challenging part of the tour was navigating some of the tight city roads during the tour stops, but the truck’s DigitalVision Mirrors were really helpful in giving me a full view of my surroundings,” Porter said. “It’s impressive how far truck technology has come. I drive a T680 for Knight Swift, and it’s a very driver-friendly truck that provides a comfortable ride, performs well, and looks great.”

A Holiday Memory That Will Stick

After nearly a month on the road and thousands of people coming out to see the tree along the way, Porter says the true highlight was the sense of joy the haul brought to each stop. Now that the Silver Belle is standing tall in the nation’s capital, he plans to return with his family to watch the lighting ceremony in person.

“To cap off this tour in D C with my family, who have been so supportive and thrilled for me to have this opportunity, is so surreal,” Porter said. “This holiday season is truly one for the books, and I’ll never forget the people we met and the pride everyone showed for this tradition.”

Affectionately known as “The People’s Tree,” the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree travels from a different national forest each year, making stops along the way to connect communities and share the holiday spirit. This year’s tree, called “Silver Belle,” comes from Nevada’s Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest and will journey all the way to Washington, D.C.

Truck drivers and families in Oklahoma will get a chance to see Silver Belle up close during a special whistle-stop celebration hosted by TCA. The free community event takes place Monday, November 10, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Remington Park in Oklahoma City (One Remington Place, C2 parking lot).

The event is made possible thanks to support from Oklahoma-based TCA members Drivers Legal Plan and Western Flyer Express, along with the Oklahoma Trucking Association. Attendees can expect a festive atmosphere filled with lights, community pride, and the kind of holiday spirit that trucking helps deliver every year.

“There’s no better way to kick off the holiday season than by welcoming the People’s Tree,” said Zander Gambill, vice president, TCA. “We are especially proud to sponsor this tradition and to offer a completely free event that brings people together in the spirit of the season. Mark Siebenaller, vice president of service operations at J. J. Keller, said the company is proud to be part of the effort. This haul is being done in partnership with the USDA Forest Service and the Society of American Foresters. The job isn’t as simple as putting the tree on a trailer and rolling out. Because of the size and route, permits are required in every state the load moves through, and that’s where J. J. Keller makes the difference.

The company’s Permit Service runs around the clock and handles close to 100,000 loads a year. Siebenaller added that helping with the move lines up with the company’s values: “Our Permit Service aligns with J. J. Keller’s core values of protecting people and businesses, so everyone returns home safely.”

Silver Belle will be harvested in late October and make appearances throughout the country on the way to the Capitol. The planned stops include:

For the 11th year in a row, Kenworth Trucks played a pivotal role in this historic event, providing a Kenworth T680 to carefully transport the tree. This particular truck dazzled with a custom wrap inspired by the Tongass and Chugach National Forests, showcasing their awe-inspiring natural beauty. The Tongass National Forest, as the largest in the nation, provided a Christmas tree worthy of becoming the heart of holiday celebrations in the capital.

The Alaska-based transportation firm Lynden carried the responsibility of this special delivery. Relying on their seasoned and trusted drivers, Fred Austin and John Schank, both veterans with over 40 years of experience and an astonishing collective record of 10 million accident-free miles, Lynden ensured the tree’s safe passage. Notably, Schank previously managed this honor in 2015 and brought his expertise back for this year’s team alongside Austin.

Spreading Holiday Cheer Across 11 States

The tree’s epic path across 11 states brought holiday joy to countless communities, stopping at 13 locations to greet the public with a festive spirit. A vibrant gathering welcomed the impressive 74-foot Sitka spruce, beautifully adorned with 10,000 ornaments crafted by students and community groups from Alaska. Before its arrival in Seattle, this iconic tree had been celebrated in Wrangell and Ketchikan and traversed a 900-mile sea route from the Tongass National Forest.

Bryan Sitko, Kenworth’s assistant general manager for operations, expressed, “Kenworth is headquartered in Washington state, employing more than 1,250 people locally, so this was a special opportunity for us to participate in this fantastic program that signifies unity and joy, and spreads holiday cheer across the country.”

Organized by the City of Renton, the event was the sole Washington state celebration during this tour. Attendees enjoyed a glimpse of the wrapped-up tree, delighting in food, music, and diverse holiday festivities. Distinguished speakers included Brandon Raille, U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree lead, Renton Mayor Armondo Pavone, Congressman Adam Smith, and Bryan Sitko.

Adding excitement to the event was Kenworth’s SuperTruck 2 demonstrator vehicle. Displayed locally for the first time, this futuristic truck, built in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy, has set new performance benchmarks. “Joining the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree at the Renton whistlestop event was Kenworth’s SuperTruck 2 demonstrator vehicle,” noted the company. Earlier this year, it achieved a remarkable 136% improvement in freight efficiency, earning the DOE Vehicle Technology Office Team Award.

Prior to the community celebration, a special preview was held for PACCAR employees at Kenworth’s Renton manufacturing facility. Employees had the chance to view the wrapped tree, autograph the trailer banner, and convey their well wishes for the 3,000-mile trip to Washington D.C.

The Kenworth T680 transporting the tree features a unique design honoring Alaska’s National Forests. It’s equipped with a 76-inch sleeper, PACCAR Powertrain, and real-time GPS tracking through Kenworth’s TruckTech+ technology, allowing the public to follow the tree’s journey via the Kenworth Tree Tracker 2024.

For the 11th year running, a Kenworth truck is poised to deliver the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree, with a scheduled arrival on November 22 at the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. The tree lighting ceremony will occur in early December, signaling the start of the festive season.
