“The Madison show was everything ATHS stands for,” said Peter Wild, the 2025 Convention Chair from Newton, Kansas. “With 870 beautifully preserved trucks and trailers, hands-on demonstrations, and learning sessions, trucking history came alive. Best of all, we swapped stories with friends old and new from around the globe.”

Held at the Alliant Energy Center, the convention offered an all-in-one venue for attendees. “The Alliant Energy Center was the perfect one-stop venue,” said Courtney Cesar, ATHS Convention Manager. “Having show trucks, vendors, learning sessions, and events under one roof — and within walking distance of hotels — made the event seamless for attendees.”

During the awards banquet, ATHS honored truckers with its prestigious Golden Achievement Awards, which celebrate over 50 years of dedication to the trucking industry. This year’s recipients included:

Bringing a Classic Back to Life

The 1984 Mack R Model, originally custom-built for Johnny Prescott and Son Oil in Concord, New Hampshire, holds a special place in Mack’s legacy. For Grayce, restoring it was more than just a challenge; it was a personal mission.

“I’ve always preferred older trucks over new, and to me, there is nothing cooler than an old dog that looks new,” said Emmick. “Growing up around Mack trucks made it easy to fall in love with the brand. The first Mack I sat behind the wheel of is a 1985 R Model that has been on our farm since 1992.”

The year-long restoration project showcased a delicate balance of preserving history while incorporating subtle modern updates. The truck still boasts its original steering wheel cap, engraved with “Custom Built for Johnny Prescott Oil Co.,” and vintage Mack bulldog mirror ornaments featuring their distinctive long ears and tails. It’s a stunning example of how tradition can meet innovation.

An Icon in the World of Trucking

Doug Maney, curator of the Mack Trucks Historical Museum, hailed the significance of this restoration effort.

“The Mack R Model series is iconic in trucking history, creating the benchmark for American transportation from 1965 and maintaining it through the mid-2000s,” Maney explained. “The fact that our trucks are not just dependable tools is reinforced by the R model, generating a source of pride for their owners. Grayce’s influence and hands-on effort, preserving original details while thoughtfully modernizing others, helps us tell the story of Mack’s heritage and the evolution of trucking in America.”

Powered by Passion and Community

The restoration was made possible by the enthusiastic support of Mack fans and the trucking community. Jim Rymes of J & H Rymes and Daughters in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, donated the truck used as the base of the project. Gregg Hoffman with Underdog Transport in Bangor, Pennsylvania, volunteered to haul the truck to Grayce’s farm in Kentucky for the restoration.

“Mack fans are loyal, dedicated, and supportive,” said Maney. “The Mack brand roots itself into people just as it has American and world history.”

It didn’t stop there. Grayce’s partner, Gavin Spoor, also contributed to the project by donating a fifth wheel from his own truck, a vehicle that played a pivotal role in their relationship during a memorable 10-hour drive from Texas.

“Mack Trucks has been an integral part of my story, and being able to donate to their legacy is nothing short of empowering to me,” Grayce reflected.

Preserving History for Future Generations

The restored Mack R Model isn’t just a truck; it’s a testament to the fusion of craftsmanship and passion, bridging generational gaps in the trucking industry.

“We’re honored to welcome this historic R Model into our collection,” said Maney. “What makes this donation particularly special is how it bridges generations, combining the craftsmanship of Mack’s past with the passion of a young enthusiast who understands the importance of preserving our trucking heritage. It will serve as an inspiring example to museum visitors of Mack’s enduring quality and the continuing legacy of our favorite brand.”

A Restoration Journey Captured on Video

The restoration process unfolded publicly through a YouTube series, allowing viewers to follow Grayce’s meticulous work step by step. Through triumphs and challenges, the series emphasized the importance of learning by doing, a value Grayce holds close to her heart.

“Through the restoration series and seeing the end result in the museum, I hope visitors and viewers can appreciate the learning process,” she explained. “Nobody wants to learn the hard way, but sometimes that’s necessary to understand your limits, what you need to improve on, and how you can do better.”

A Farm with a Rich History

Grayce’s restoration work is deeply rooted in her personal history. As part of the eighth generation to run Emmick Farms, established in 1813 along the Ohio River in Lewisport, Kentucky, she carries on a legacy that spans more than two centuries. The farm, known for its corn, soybeans, and winter wheat, is steeped in history. Its riverbank was once home to Abraham Lincoln’s ferry business, where Abraham Lincoln won his first court case, forever shaping his political career.

Mack Trucks Historical Museum

The restored 1984 Mack R Model now proudly resides in the Mack Trucks Historical Museum, located within the Mack Experience Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania. This nonprofit museum celebrates its 40-year history of preserving and showcasing Mack’s invaluable contributions to American industry.

The 15,000-square-foot facility houses an impressive collection of 30 operational vintage vehicles, alongside archives that hold over 40 million pages of documents detailing Mack’s role in pivotal moments, from World War I to iconic infrastructure projects such as the Hoover Dam and the New York City subway system.

A Closer Look at the 1925 Kenworth KS 3-Ton

“This 1925 Kenworth KS 3-Ton is a very early Kenworth model,” remarked the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum in a statement. “Most trucks at that time, aside from Macks, Packards and Whites were assembled trucks. This one is no exception.”

At the heart of this vintage marvel is a Buda 4-Cylinder engine, paired with a Cotta 4-Speed transmission and a Timken-manufactured rear axle. While its top speed of 25 mph may sound modest by today’s standards, during its heyday, this truck exemplified cutting-edge engineering.

“Kenworths are still assembled trucks today,” the museum further explained, emphasizing the brand’s enduring commitment to its foundational approach to manufacturing.

Kenworth’s Origin Story

The story of Kenworth began in 1912 in Portland, Oregon, with the establishment of Gerlinger Motor Car Works by brothers George and Louis Gerlinger. Initially a retailer of both automobiles and trucks, the company released its first heavy-duty truck, the Gersix, in 1915. The business eventually moved to Tacoma, Washington, before being acquired by Edgar Worthington and Frederick Kent, who renamed it the Gersix Motor Company.

Kenworth Motor Truck Company came to life in 1923 when Frederick Kent’s son, Harry Kent, and Edgar Worthington officially incorporated the company by combining their surnames. While Kenworth became synonymous with trucks, it also ventured into bus manufacturing early on and began incorporating diesel engines into its vehicles by 1933. The 1925 KS model on display gained popularity among heavy industries like logging in the Northwest.

Unearthing a Rare Treasure

The 1925 Kenworth KS 3-Ton currently featured in the exhibit comes with an incredible backstory. Found not far from Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond, Washington, this truck—with serial number 2012—was used by a construction firm to haul dynamite. With its unique combination of hard rubber tires on the rear and pneumatic tires up front, it is believed to be the oldest surviving KS model to date.

The Legacy of the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum

Bill Moon, the founder of the Iowa 80 Truckstop, envisioned preserving trucking history, which led to the establishment of the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum. Moon’s passion for antique trucks and collectibles fuelled this one-of-a-kind collection, which now showcases rare and significant vehicles.

“We are pleased to be able to share this collection with the general public,” the museum said. “Every truck has a story to tell and can provide a unique glimpse back in time. Many rare and one-of-a-kind trucks are on display. View short films about trucking history in our REO theater which is a great way to learn even more about the trucks of yesteryear.”

The Go Iowa Fund was created to provide financial support to charitable initiatives and community-focused organizations in Iowa. The fund allows employees of Iowa 80 Group and others to request grants for causes they’re passionate about, with grants being awarded twice a year. Any Iowa-based nonprofit or organization that benefits Iowa residents or students is eligible to apply.

During the latest grant cycle in December 2024, funds were awarded to a number of organizations, including Trucker Buddy International and the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum.

Headquartered in Alabama, Trucker Buddy International is a nonprofit program that connects professional truck drivers with classrooms around the country. Acting as pen-pals, these drivers engage students while fostering a positive understanding of the trucking industry and its essential role in society.

Situated in Walcott, Iowa, the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum is a 100,000-square-foot facility dedicated to preserving the rich history of trucking. The museum is home to over 130 vintage trucks spanning from 1903 to 1997, as well as antique signs, toy trucks, and other collectible memorabilia. Admission to the museum is free, offering an educational and nostalgic experience for visitors of all ages.

A Special 40th Anniversary Celebration

To honor this landmark anniversary, the Mack Trucks Historical Museum will be featured at the biennial Trucktoberfest, hosted at the Mack Experience Center each October. This event will provide a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the rich history of Mack Trucks, which has played a crucial role in significant historical events and infrastructure projects.

“Since its inception in 1900, Mack Trucks has been involved in everything from World War I to major infrastructure projects such as the construction of the Hoover Dam and the New York City subway system,” said David Galbraith, Mack Trucks vice president, global brand, and marketing. “We are proud to have the Mack Museum showcase all of these landmark construction projects, as well as Mack’s 124 years of achievements.”

A Unique Collection of Operational Vehicles

The museum showcases 30 operational vehicles, all meticulously restored and maintained by dedicated staff and volunteers. Highlights include a 1909 Mack tourist bus, which saw service in Chicago and New Orleans, and the iconic 2006 Mack Granite military truck, Megatron, from the 2011 film “Transformers, Dark of the Moon.”

An Archive of Unmatched Historical Records

Beyond its vehicle displays, the museum boasts an archive of over 40 million pages of records, chronicling Mack’s history and its pivotal role in the evolution of American trucking. Visitors can explore these records to gain insights into the technological advancements and historical significance of Mack Trucks.

“Not only do we preserve and catalog the Mack legacy, but we also share the importance of our vehicles to the function of the world,” said Doug Maney, Mack Museum curator and lead caretaker. “Each year, we answer more than 1,500 questions about Mack, from dealers seeking to service an older truck to hobbyists asking about vehicle parts. It is an honor to maintain Mack history by providing this information.”

Memorabilia and Tours

The museum also features a wide array of memorabilia, including a 20-foot Bulldog statue from Mack’s former headquarters in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Tours are available by reservation on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2:30 p.m.
